New names for old buildings
Persons who are fond of the Christmas street decorations in downtown Jefferson should take photos this year, as it’s the last year for them. Jefferson city administrator Mike Palmer shared that news with the county supervisors at his monthly update Monday.
According to Palmer, the Jefferson Matters: Main Street design committee is designing the new decorations. Palmer also said Jefferson mayor and Bell Tower Community Foundation board member Craig Berry has refurbished the lighted bells in the windows of the observation deck on the bell tower. The foundation paid for the materials.
He said work on two city-owned downtown buildings – the former Pizza Ranch and the building across the street – is waiting for storefront glass.
Main Street has claimed naming rights on the buildings, “rather than keeping calling them ‘the former this’ or ‘the former that’,” he said. The Pizza Ranch building has been dubbed “the arcade” because it has three different bays. The building across the street is “the harness shop” because decades ago that’s what the building was used for. The building at the corner of E. State and N. Chestnut Sts, formerly Lawton Chiropractic, is now “City View” because of the view from the front windows.
